Our Mission
At the core of “Día De Los Muertos in Las Cruces: Arte, Música y Cultura” is a mission to celebrate the rich cultural heritage of Día de los Muertos while introducing a contemporary twist that engages and inspires younger generations. We created this event to complement the rich cultural events already happening in Las Cruces and within our neighboring communities. By scheduling our celebration in the evening, we offer attendees the opportunity to extend their festivities and enjoy our unique blend of tradition and modern flair without having to choose between other Day of the Dead events happening in neighboring local communities. We aim to create a space where the community can come together to honor ancestors, celebrate life, and strengthen bonds through shared traditions and modern experiences.
Las Cruces, New Mexico What's happening
Juried Art Exhibits
Art is the heartbeat of our event, and we are thrilled to showcase the incredible talent of local artists through our juried art exhibits. Each piece is a unique interpretation of Day of the Dead themes, blending traditional motifs with contemporary creativity. Attendees will have the opportunity to view these stunning works, some of which will be available for purchase, and witness the creativity that flourishes within our community. Artists will compete for cash prizes, adding an exciting competitive edge to the exhibit, while also elevating the visibility of their work.
Musical Performances
Music is an integral part of Día de los Muertos, serving as a vibrant conduit for honoring and remembering loved ones who have passed. Our live musical performances will create an atmosphere of joyous remembrance, filling the night with rhythms and melodies that echo the spirit of the occasion. From traditional tunes to contemporary sounds, our performers will captivate audiences of all ages, ensuring that the celebration is both a tribute to the past and a reflection of the present.
Community Organizations Altars
One of the most poignant elements of Día de los Muertos is the creation of altars, or “ofrendas,” that honor those who have passed away. At our event, community organizations will come together to build beautiful and meaningful altars that serve as tributes to loved ones. This section of the event features a cash prize competition, with the winning altar’s organization receiving a donation. The public will have the opportunity to vote for their favorite altar online, and the winner will be announced on the event website a few days after the celebration. These altars are not only a testament to the love and respect we have for those who have passed, but they also strengthen the bonds within our community, bringing us closer together through shared acts of remembrance.
Silent Auction
Our silent auction is a highlight of the evening, featuring unique items generously contributed by local vendors, artists, and supporters. From one-of-a-kind art pieces to handcrafted goods, the auction offers something for everyone.
Calavera Face Jewel Decorating
No Día de los Muertos celebration would be complete without the iconic calavera, or skull, which symbolizes the celebration of life and the honoring of those who have passed. Participants can engage in face jewel decorating, transforming into colorful calaveras that reflect the joyous spirit of the occasion. This activity is a fun and creative way for attendees to immerse themselves in the culture and take home a piece of the celebration.
Local Vendors Marketplace
Supporting small businesses is a key component of our event. Our local vendors marketplace will be filled with talented artisans selling Día de los Muertos-inspired items and more. This marketplace is the perfect place to find unique items while supporting local entrepreneurs. Whether you’re looking for a special souvenir or simply want to explore the creativity of our community, the marketplace offers a little something for everyone.
Children’s Crafts and Play Area
We’ve designed a special area just for the little ones, making sure that our Día de los Muertos celebration is a family-friendly event. The Children’s Crafts and Play Area will be buzzing with activities, including arts and crafts, bubbles, and games that will keep kids entertained throughout the evening. It’s the perfect space for families to engage in the festivities together, ensuring that even our youngest attendees can participate in the celebration.
Beer Garden
For attendees 21 and over, our Beer Garden will offer a relaxing space to unwind and enjoy a selection of locally crafted brews. Set within the vibrant atmosphere of the event, our Beer Garden will provide the perfect backdrop to enjoy the evening’s festivities with friends and fellow community members. Please note that a valid ID is required for entry into our beer garden.
Free Pan Dulce & Café de Olla
Indulge in the flavors of tradition with free pan dulce and café de olla, offered to attendees while supplies last. These comforting treats are a staple of Día de los Muertos, symbolizing the sweetness of life and the warmth of community. Be sure to grab yours early and savor these delicious offerings as you explore all that our event has to offer.
Free Community Altar
At the heart of our Día de los Muertos celebration stands our Free Community Altar, a sacred space dedicated to honoring and remembering our loved ones who have passed. We invite all community members to bring a copy photograph of past loved ones—and place it on the altar. Please note that this is a public altar, so we highly encourage you to bring copies of photos instead of originals. Please include your name and mailing address on the back of your photocopy if you wish to have it copy mailed back to you.
